Visit in Toronto, Canada
Toronto - Part Five
On Wednesday, catching
up on a few things before going up to Montreal tomorrow, we went to the
Bob Rumball Center for the Deaf in Toronto. This is a multi-purpose
community center with a variety of programs for deaf individuals, designed
to provide opportunities for a higher quality of life, while preserving
and promoting their language and culture. The center has many programs
like training low-functional adult Deaf people in skills such as woodshop,
printing, packing, upholstering, crafts and more. They have senior
citizens for the nursing home and functional people at the dormitory.
Also, there is a nice church for Deaf people to see the Deaf pastor.
I would suggest you
see their programs on their Webpage. It is http://www.bobrumball.org,
and it talls you all about the programs. I didn't get full information,
but from what I could see it cost between 50 and 100 million dollars.
One of the staff thinks there are over 160 on the staff. Also, there
are 10 group homes all over Ontario, and they have 400 acres for camping
for multi-handicapped adults, low-functional adults, silent weekend programs,
youth programs and more. Overall the program service is the best
one in the world that I know of.
On Thursday I will
be ready to go to Montreal.
