Visit in Toronto, Canada

Toronto - Part Four

On Tuesday Dympna took me to the Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf at Bellevill, Ontario (1-1/2 hours drive from Toronto) to see her 22-year-old deaf son, Aaron (the only child she has).  He works as a residence counselor.  We had lunch with him and talked about many things.  He guided us around the school, and we met Bill Gregory, Ken Roberts and three other deaf teachers.  I remembered Bill and Ken from Gallaudet days.  One thing that made me sad was that there is less enrollment -- 90 students -- and there used to be 520 students a long time ago.  Most of them are now mainstreaming in hearing schools.  Also, Aaron took us to the cemetery where Samuel Thomas Greene is buried.  Samuel Greene was the first Deaf teacher in Canada and has been a friend of Laurent Clerc.
